September 2019 Meeting

The meeting of the Greenville Art League on September 18 will feature a demonstration of painting in oil by artist and educator Emily Broussard.  It promises to be an engaging demonstration and should be of interest for all skill levels.

The Art Challenge for this month is Continuous Line Drawing. Everyone is encouraged to try the challenge and bring their work to show at the meeting. All attendees can vote on their favorite work, and the one with the most votes will decide the "Artist Of The Month."

The meeting is Wednesday September 18, 2019, from 3 PM to 5 PM at the W. Walworth Harrison Public Library, 1 Lou Finney Lane, Greenville, Texas.

The Greenville Art League Presents:
Oil Painting Demo
by Local Artist,
 Emily Broussard

When: Wednesday, Sept. 18th @ 3-5pm
Where: Walworth Library, Greenville, Tx

Join Emily Broussard for a demonstration of her oil painting process including color choice and management, modulation in brush stroke quality, experimenting with mediums, and constructing striking compositions.
This demonstration is for all skill-levels with an emphasis on engagement with the audience.

Emily Broussard is a local artist and educator. She teaches at Texas A&M University-Commerce, and work in her studio in East Tawakoni, Texas.

Continuous Line Drawing - Challenge for September

A continuous line drawing is one in which a single, unbroken line is used to develop the image. Although mostly created as an exercise, many continuous line drawings can stand on their own as finished works of art. As an exercise, continuous line drawing forces the artist to closely observe the perceived lines of the subject. While focused mostly on describing the contours, shadows and form can also be communicated depending on the approach taken.

Why Create Continuous Line Drawings - Aside from the fact that a continuous line drawing can be a work of art in its own right, it is also a worthy drawing exercise for developing hand-eye coordination and observation skills. As artists, we need to spend a bit of time in practice to further develop our drawing skills.

Any mark-making tool can be used, but pens, markers, and graphite pencils are most commonly used.

The "Rules" for Continuous Line Drawing

While there should never be a set of rules for making art, there are a few parameters to make the drawing exercise most effective.
The first thing you should recognize is that no drawing will be perfect. With continuous line drawing, the imperfections will be very clear. However, it is often these very same imperfections that make the drawings so visually interesting. So, instead of avoiding the imperfections of the mark, embrace them and allow them to add a bit of character to the end result.
Ok, now to the "rules"...
  1. Any mark-making tool can be used, but pens, markers, and graphite pencils are most commonly used.
  2. Once you place your pen or pencil on the surface, do not (try not to) remove it until the drawing is complete. Your goal is to describe the subject with one, singular line. It can become thicker and thinner in areas, but it should never break.
  3. Try to move your hand at a similar speed in which you observe the subject with your eyes. This will help to create more accurate proportions and shapes. But remember, perfection is not attainable.
  4. Do not erase. Leave the imperfections and let them be a human element in your work. (As humans, we are attracted to artifacts that are clearly made by other hu---mans.)
  5. Repeat. Do several drawings in one sitting and try different tools. You may find that you are more comfortable completing the exercise with a graphite pencil instead of an ink pen or vice versa.

Mini Pop-Up Gallery

Attention Art League Members!  Our pop-up show at The Well in Royse City is just around the corner.  It will be held June 13 – June 22.  The Well is located at 103 East Main Street.

If you are interested in participating, here are the details.
Cost:  A $ 10 entrance fee for each artist will be charged with money going into the general budget of the Art League and should be paid at time of submission.

Description of Art:  Because our space is very limited, each artist can enter only one piece with a size limit of 11 x 14 inches unframed (154 square inches).   However, please submit an alternate piece as well, and, if for some reason, we have additional space, that piece will also be displayed.

Time of Submission: Deliver your piece to Marcie Penland on June 11 between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. The first ten members to submit their work will be the ones whose work is displayed. When you deliver your work, you will need to complete a disclaimer and art tag listing your contact information. Those forms will be available at time of delivery. Email artleaguegreenville@gmail.com for the address.

Set-up/Take-down:  Marcie Penland and Angela Mattingly will take care of setting up and taking down the art.  During the time period it is on display, we will let you know when/where you can pick your art up once the show is over.

Attend:  Please be sure and patronize The Well during time of display.  The owners are being very nice to do this for us!  It is a family-friendly, small restaurant with great food, frequent live music, and a lot of foot traffic.  This particular show is on a small scale, and maybe in the future, we can expand it.  It’s certainly a chance to immediately expand your art’s viewing audience!

Alternatve To Demo

Our demonstrator had to cancel for the meeting tomorrow (Wednesday April 17 at 3 PM). As an alternative, I am inviting each artist attending to bring a piece of art they would like to talk about. We will have an informal discussion about art. This would be in addition to work you bring for the Art Challenge.

There is a good chance it will be raining during our meeting time, but the high winds and severe weather are not predicted until late tomorrow evening.

Meeting April 2019

Greenville Art League Meeting

The next Greenville Art League meeting will feature a demonstration of Acrylic painting by artist Patsy Seward. She will create a floral of bluebonnets in a vase.

Art League members and visitors are invited to bring artwork for the Art Challenge. Everyone present will be invited to view the works and vote for their favorite. The artist whose work is voted the favorite will be declared Artist Of The Month and will receive a certificate.

The theme for the monthly Art Challenge will be “Outside Your Comfort Zone.” Browse through YouTube tutorials and try something you don’t usually do, for example a photographer might try a watercolor, or an artist who usually paints in oil might try a sculpture. Have fun with it, try something new, and see what happens.

Art League Meeting and Golden Demo

The next Greenville Art League will feature artist Justin Burns, representing Golden Paints.

GOLDEN Lecture Demo

The GOLDEN Acrylics FREE lecture and demonstration is a fun informative, educational and fast-paced presentation of all the products GOLDEN has to offer. The Lecture covers information about the different types of acrylic paints, mediums, gels, pastes and grounds. The lecture will also cover a technical review of acrylics and their varied application possibilities, techniques in working with mixed media, meeting printmaking, and the review of GOLDEN’s newest products including OPEN acrylics, High Flow acrylics and QoR watercolor. This lecture will hopefully give you some new insights that can be added to your creative process. All participants will receive a free information packet, hand painted color charts and a bag of free GOLDEN product samples to take home.

Art Challenge

Also, Art League members and visitors are invited to bring artwork for the Art Challenge. Everyone present will be invited to view the works and vote for their favorite. The artist whose work is voted the favorite will be declared Artist Of The Month and will receive a certificate.

The theme for the monthly Art Challenge will be “Night Vision.” While the previous two challenges were meant to get us trying new techniques, “Night Vision” is meant to get us approaching our work from a different perspective.

Create a piece that is about, informed by, or suggests NIGHT. Whether you paint landscapes, still life, portraits, abstracts, sculpt, assemble, etc. . . consider how things are changed by night. Certainly the light source, but also the activities we do and the items we use are different at night.

Tips:
*Consider the light source carefully. Is it the moon, a light bulb, a candle, the television? Is it strong or soft? Does it light your subject fully or partially?
*Spend time just observing the effect of your chosen light source on different objects.
